Guests tap their phone on a small tag and your menu appears. It looks like magic, but the technology is simple, mature, and already in every pocket: it is the same radio standard behind tap-to-pay. This guide explains what is inside an NFC table tag, what happens during a tap, which phones are compatible, and what to look for when you put tags on your tables.
What is inside an NFC tag?
An NFC tag is three things laminated together:
- A chip that stores a small amount of data, in this case the link to your menu hub.
- An antenna, a flat coil of copper or aluminum around the chip.
- A housing: the sticker, card, or table stand the chip and antenna live inside.
Notice what is missing: a battery. NFC tags are passive. They have no power source, nothing to charge, and nothing to switch on. The tag can sit on a table for years doing nothing, then respond instantly to the ten-thousandth tap exactly like the first.
What happens during a tap
NFC stands for Near Field Communication, a short-range radio standard operating at 13.56 MHz. The sequence during a tap:
- The phone powers the tag. An NFC-capable phone constantly emits a tiny electromagnetic field from its own antenna. When the phone comes within a few centimeters of the tag, that field induces a current in the tag's antenna coil. The phone is literally powering the tag through the air.
- The tag transmits its data. Energized, the chip transmits its stored data back through the same coil: for a menu tag, a web address in a standard format called NDEF that every phone understands.
- The phone acts on it. The phone recognizes the data as a link and shows a notification. The guest taps it and the menu opens in the browser.
The whole exchange takes a fraction of a second. Range is deliberately tiny, a few centimeters at most, which is a feature: taps are always intentional, and nobody can read or trigger the tag from across the room.
Which phones support NFC tags?
Short version: if a phone can tap to pay, it can tap your menu.
iPhone. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onward reads NFC tags in the background automatically: hold the phone near the tag while the screen is on, and the link notification appears. iPhone 7, 8, and X have the hardware and can read tags through the NFC reader in the control center. In 2026, the overwhelming majority of iPhones in guests' hands read tags with zero setup.
Android. Nearly every Android phone released in the past decade includes NFC, across flagships and mid-range models alike. Tag reading is built into the OS: with NFC enabled (the default on most phones) and the screen on, the tap works immediately. No app is needed on either platform.

Durability: built for restaurant tables
Restaurant tables are a hostile environment: spills, heat, daily chemical cleaning, and thousands of touches. NFC tags handle this well precisely because they are passive:
- Sealed electronics. The chip and antenna are fully encapsulated, so wiping with standard cleaners does not touch them.
- No wear mechanism. Reading a tag is contactless and passive, so taps do not wear it out. Quality chips are rated for decades of data retention.
- No maintenance. Nothing to charge, update, or reboot. A tag that is mounted well simply keeps working.
The practical failure modes are physical: a tag peeled off by a curious guest or a stand knocked around. Choose tags with strong adhesive or mounted stands, and keep one or two spares per location.
Can the tag be tampered with?
A properly deployed menu tag is locked at programming time. Locking is a one-way operation supported by the chip itself: once locked, the stored link can never be rewritten, by anyone. Combined with NFC's centimeter-scale range, that closes off remote attacks entirely; there is no way to alter or read your tag from a distance. This is a meaningful security advantage over QR codes, which can be photographed, cloned, or covered with a fraudulent sticker.
What the tag opens is the real product
The tag itself is a pointer. What matters is where it points. A bare NFC sticker from an electronics shop can open a PDF; a purpose-built system opens a live menu hub for the specific location: the menu, WiFi access, a Google review link, payment, and tonight's specials, all editable from a dashboard without touching the tags again.

Does the guest need an app? No. Tag reading is built into iOS and Android, and the menu opens in the browser.
Does NFC work if the phone is in a case? Yes, through normal cases. Only thick metal cases interfere, and repositioning the phone slightly usually resolves it.
Does lighting or table material matter? Lighting does not matter at all, unlike QR codes. Table material mostly does not, with one exception: mounting a tag directly on metal requires a tag with a ferrite backing layer, which on-metal tags include.
How much data fits on a tag? Common chips store between a few hundred bytes and a few kilobytes. A web link uses a tiny fraction of that, and a link is all a menu tag needs.
